Mastering some of the finer nuances of golf are crucial to achieving success in your golfing journey. This makes more sense when you consider that golf is a game where a few inches outside the hole might spell the difference between a par and a bogey or a birdie. You can undoubtedly shave some strokes off if you can grasp the more subtle aspects that can absolutely affect your play. One of those details that really has a major impact on how you play is altitude. Living here in the Mile High city, we know all about this and have learned to somewhat adjust. We were just treated to a weekend of watching PGA players adjust their games accordingly here at the BMW Championship a week or so ago, so it’s a real thing for everyone!
Here in Denver, of course, we are used to playing at higher elevations and mountain courses, and we quickly learned that getting ready for the altitude change is critical. The altitude that you are at when playing on any given golf course is going to impact not only the flight of the ball in specific ways, but club selection as well. Maybe you travel for business or want to enjoy golf on vacation at lower elevations? Simulation of these conditions on our Trackman Simulators is a breeze!
Gaining Distance & Learning The Curve
The air becomes thinner as you rise in altitude and has less of an effect on the ball’s flight. There are a couple of things happening here. First, it causes the ball to fly farther, which can be fantastic but can also lead to issues. When your wedge shots soar over the green, you won’t be nearly as delighted as when your drives fly considerably farther than they usually do! It is possible to adjust your distance control at altitude, although it can be difficult.
Secondly, because of the thinner air, playing at high elevations also tends to cause the ball to curve less. Naturally, that helps to keep you in the bounds and in play, but if you’re not used to it, it can also be a huge “learning curve”, so to speak!
Choose Your Altitude
Thankfully, there’s a handy function called TrackMan Altitude that makes getting ready for different-altitude golf outings quite straightforward. You can choose Target Practice and then Settings after entering the Practice Range area. You can then set the desired value for Altitude depending on the course you plan to play by selecting the Altitude option on that screen. You’ll know what changes are necessary during practice after you see how the altitude affects results in terms of carry distance data and other statistics. Our friendly and knowledgeable staff can assist you if you have any questions or need further assistance.
